Short Bio

Uta Pottgiesser is Professor of Interior Architeture at the Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture and Urban Planning (ARIAS) since 2017. From 2004-2016 she has been Chair of Building Construction and Materials at Detmold School of Architecture and Interior Architecture at Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences (HS OWL), Germany.

From 2006-2011 she served as Vice-President for Research, Development and Internationalisation of HS OWL and from 2012-2016 as Dean of the Detmold School of Architecture and Interior Architcture. As Vice-President she was implementing the strategies of research and internationalisation. As Dean she was responsible for the reaccreditation of all 10 programs and for establishing the new interdisciplinary and English speaking programs ”Master of Integrated Architectural Design (MIAD)” and ”Master of Integrated Design (MID)” focussing the facade and computational design. These programs prepare to deal with the needs of the architectural profession related to interdisciplinarity in a globalized world.

After obtaining her Diploma in Architecture at TU Berlin (Germany) in 1991 she worked as an architect with a focus on office and administration buildings. From 1998-2004 she was Research Assistant and Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at TU Dresden (Germany) where she earned her Ph.D. (Dr.-Ing.) on “Multilayered Glass Constructions: Energy and Construction” in 2002. She is a member of the Berlin Chamber of Architects.

This experience gives her a multidisciplinary background in architecture, civil engineering and interior architecture. Her work and research on building construction, interior and facade design has also led her to deal with research in the field of creative problem solving and product innovation to improve human well-being in spatial contexts. She has been teaching and lecturing in many international conferences and universities in Europe, North and South America and Asia and is a co-founder of the European Facade Network (efn), member of Docomomo Germany and International. Since 2016 she is Chair of the Docomomo International Scientific Committee Technology (ISC-T).

Dr. Ismahane Elouafi

Director General, International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA), UAE

Ismahane Elouafi is Director General of the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA), a not‐for‐profit research‐for‐development organization she has been leading since 2012. She is a visionary leader and strategic thinker, highly adept as a transformational groundbreaker, delivering comprehensive stakeholder engagement as a change management champion, motivator, and relationship builder. Before Joining ICBA, she was Director of Research Management and Partnerships Division at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

She is a recipient of a number of awards and honors, including the National Reward Medal by His Majesty Mohamed VI, the King of Morocco, and the Excellence in Science Award from the Global Thinkers Forum. In 2016, she was awarded the Arab Women of the year in the Science Category.

Dr Elouafi holds a PhD degree in genetics from Cordoba University, Spain.

Prof. Ismael Al-Hinti

Ismael Al-Hinti is a professor, a passionate educator, an entrepreneur, and a recognized energy expert. He combines nineteen years of academic research and teaching experience, with an exceptional industrial track record.
Prof. Al-Hinti received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in 2002 from Queen’s University Belfast, UK. His Ph.D. research was supported by Ford Motor Company, and later received a research grant from General Motors for his post-Doctoral research at the same university. In 2003 he joined the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Hashemite University and later served as Head of the Department during the period between 2006 and 2008. The success on the department level promoted Prof. Al-Hinti in 2007 to become the Director of the Centre for Academic Quality Assurance at the same university. In this position he became in charge of coordinating and supervising quality assurance, accreditation, strategic planning, faculty development, and faculty assessment activities and programs throughout the university. In 2011 he joined the School of Applied Technical Sciences at the German Jordanian University. Through his position as Department Head between 2011 and 2014, he led the establishment of the Mechanical & Maintenance Engineering Department and the development of a new study program.
Beside his rich academic experience, Prof. Al-Hinti is also a renowned expert and national leader in the fields of in energy management, energy auditing, measurement & verification, and renewable energy applications. He authored/co-authored 35 research papers in international energy journals, and received several local and international awards and research grants. In 2011, he co-founded ETA-max Energy & Environmental Solutions, which later became a market leader in the fields of renewable energy and energy efficiency in the Middle East region. Through his leadership position, he supervised the design and installation of grid-connected and off-grid solar photovoltaic projects in Jordan with a total capacity exceeding 20,000 kWp and managed over 45 energy audits for industrial facilities and office buildings in Jordan, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. Moreover, Prof. Al-Hinti has a proven track record for developing and conducting capacity building and training programs in energy management and renewable energy for high profile regional clients, and is an authorized trainer by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) for its CEM, CMVP, BEP courses and examinations. In 2016, Prof. Al-Hinti received special recognition from the AEE as a “Legend in Energy”. In 2016 he was elected as the Vice Chairman of the Jordan Green Building Council, and he is active in a variety of professional organizations and institutions.

Prof. Mohammed Ismail

Mohammed Ismail a prolific author and entrepreneur in the field of chip design / test and nanotechnology, spent over 25 years in academia and industry in the US and Europe He obtained his BS and MS from Cairo University, Egypt and His PhD from the University of Manitoba, Canada , all in electrical engineering.
He is the Founder of the Ohio State University's (OSU) Analog VLSI Lab, one of the foremost research entities in the fields of analog, mixed signal and RF integrated circuits and served as its Director. He held a Research Chair on nano-electronics circuits at the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) where he founded the RaMSiS Research Group there. He had visiting appointments in Finland (Aalto university), Norway (NTH and University of Oslo), the Netherlands (Twente University) and Japan (Tokyo Institute of Technology).

He Joined KUSTAR, the UAE in 2011, where he held the ATIC (now Mubadala Technology) Professor Chair and is Founding Chair of the ECE Department. He is the Founding Director of the Khalifa Semiconductor Research Center (KSRC) . His current research focuses on CMOS RF and mm-wave ICs , energy harvesting and power management, wearable Biochips and Systems on Chip ( SoCs) for the Internet of Things ( IoTs) and smart self-driving vehicles. He joined Wayne State University in Detroit, MI,USA as professor and Chair of ECE while maintaining his position at KUSTAR as an Adjunct.

He lead a research team that developed the first CMOS combo 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi Radio chip which was commercialized. More recently He developed with his colleagues the world first self-powered wearable device that predicts the onset of a heart attack long before it happens and is currently in the process of commercializing it in partnership with the Cleveland Clinic, a world leading hospital in cardiology.

He advised the work of over 50 Ph.D. students and of over 100 M.S. students. He authored or co-authored over 20 books and over 170 journal publications, 300 conference papers and has 15 US patents granted and several pending.

He is the Founding Editor of the Springer Journal of Analog Integrated Circuits and Signal Processing and serves as the Journal's Editor-in-Chief. He served the IEEE in many editorial and administrative capacities. He is the Founder of the IEEE International Conference on Electronics, Circuits and Systems (ICECS), the flagship Region 8 Conference of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society and a Co-Founder of the IEEE International Symposium on Quality Electronic Design (ISQED). He received the US Presidential Young Investigator Award from the White House, the Ohio State Lumley Research Award four times, in 1992, 1997, 2002 and 2007 and the US Semiconductor Research Corporation's Inventor Recognition Award twice as well as several best paper awards. He is a Fellow of IEEE.

Short Bio

Martin Kaltschmitt studied for petroleum engineering at Clausthal University of Technology / Germany and did his PhD in the field of renewable energies at Stuttgart University / Germany. Afterwards he headed a research group in the field of biomass / renewable energy at the same university where he did his habilitation. After a research stay at King's College in London / UK and at the University of California at Berkeley / USA he became the managing director of the Leipziger Institute for Energy in Leipzig / Germany. In 2006 be has been promoted to a full professor at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) in Hamburg / Germany. Here he is heading the Institute of Environmental Technology and Energy Economics (IUE). Between 2008 and 2010 he was in parallel also the scientific managing director of the German Biomass Research Centre located in Leipzig / Germany. He published more than 15 books and more than 250 papers in scientific magazines. He gave also more than 500 presentation on scientific conferences and seminars. He has been active as a short time consultant for the EC, several German ministries, the DFG, the DAAD, the FFG, the GIZ and others. Additionally he carries out technical consultancy work for large companies. He realised various research oriented projects in South America, South-East Asia, Africa and of course in Europe.

Mr.Youssef Arfaoui

Mr. Youssef Arfaoui holds a M. Sc. in Mechanical Engineering combined with Finance with main focus on renewable and clean investments from the Technical University of Denmark.  Mr. Arfaoui has more than 25 years’ experience in various areas and sectors (consulting and advisory service, energy policies/strategies, energy saving, investment and implementation of small &large energy projects, industrial production, Medicinal production, infrastructure and lastly project due diligence). Among these a few can be mentioned such as the energy sector specifically Renewable Energy Technologies (hydro, Geothermal, solar and wind, project Carbon credit, energy saving) environmental and Climate issues. He is a well-appreciated leader style and led a number of project-teams.  During his former position as Chief Renewable Energy Specialist at the African Development Bank (AfDB), Mr. Arfaoui initiated and introduced Clean Investments to the Bank, contributed to the preparation of the Bank’s clean investment Framework. He led and closed a good number of transactions in Public and Private sector primarily with focus on: (i) Cogen (90MW closed), (ii) Geothermal (500MW closed), (iii) Hydro (600MW closed), (vi) Solar (300MW Closed) and (v) Wind (1200MW closed). Additionally, Mr. Arfaoui carried out a good number of training course in infrastructure and RE: (i) design and integration of wind energy to the national grid, (ii) design and application hydro power, (iii) application and mitigation of investment risk of geothermal projects; (iv) design and application of solar PV and CP, (v) Preparation and training manuals for utilities engineers.  In the last couple of years Mr. Arfaoui held the post of Mitigation Coordinator Green Climate Fund (GCF) with core responsibility: (i) lead and guide  a team of specialists to review and perform a second due diligence of funding proposals submitted to the fund for financing, (ii) initiated the preparation of the operation and investment manual for the fund (public sector), (iii) contributed to the preparation of various climate change and investment policy documents.
